“Good literature substitutes for experience which we have not ourselves lived
through.” – Alexander Solzhenitsyn
I believe that this is not a suitable quote because there is not a substitute for first hand experience. I can understand that literature portrays experiences but it does not make you any better at an activity especially one that requires skill.
example: You can read all about archery but you will never have any skill if you don't practice
this quote ties into my book in the way I will not experience any of what the character go through, but unlike the quote,it does not mean that I am experiencing what the characters are going through while reading.

the rest of the book
After being stuck in their cells for quite a while Bilbo gets a plan for their escape. When everyone is at a feast Bilbo lets them out and packs them in empty wine barrels and then when the elves put them in the river and open the gates to get rid of the barrels they get shipped off too. After seeing that his friends are safe Bilbo jumps in after them....after getting acquainted in the lake town below the mountain they set off towards it. When they get in Bilbo goes down inside the mountain. He sees the evil dragon, Smoug, sleeping and so he steals a cup. This makes Smoug mad and so he eats the ponies. Bilbo goes down again and finds a weakness in Smoug's plating. Unfortunately he says how they were helped by the people of Lake Town and so Smoug goes to demolish the town. A company commander is told this weakness by a raven and so he kills the dragon with a black arrow...seeing how the dwarfs and the hobbit did not know this they went down to the mountains center with extreme caution. Bilbo goes to investigate the place to see if the dragon was hiding in ambush and he find the arken stone of thrain, the center of the mountain and a precious stone to Thorin, and of course he takes it.
The rest of the book is moderately boring and so this will be brief.... the people of Lake Town want some of the gold but Thorin is not going to cooperate so Bilbo gives the arken stone to the chief and he reunites with Gandalf... the dwarfs from Dane come to siege war on them and meanwhile the goblins come and so everyone unites to fight them. The eagles come and help and they finally defeated them. Unfortunately Thorin is killed, and so the gold is divided properly. And everyone lives happily ever after....

more tunes
so I thought of some more songs to represent my book.
when I think of the dwarfs I can almost hear Grieg's, In the Hall of the Mountain King. Also when I think of Murkwood and it's dark and eeriness I think of the very beginning of Stravinsky's, Firebird. Finally, when the dwarfs are in the elves cells and they are loosing hope I think of "O care wilt thou dispatch mee, madrigal in 2 sections for 5 voices." The second section is when Bilbo comes with his plan

music
The question of the week is to find 4 songs that represents the people or scenes in the book, when the hobbit and dwarfs go into the mountain (don't worry I haven't wrote a summary about it yet) and they see the treasure I can almost hear Mussorgsky’s Great Gate of Kiev in his Pictures of an Exhibition... (I could only think of this one but I will get more this evening)

quick summary
So apparently I am not suppose to write a detailed summary so here is a quick summary of what has happened in the book.
Once out of the caves Bilbo finds the dwarfs and they set off as quickly as they could so as not to get caught by the angry goblin. They find a nice place to camp when the evil wolves find them in their meeting place. Being allies to the goblins they trap them in trees and when the goblins show up they set the trees on fire. Luckily the great eagles come and save the company. After being fed the eagles drop them off and the find a person’s house that Gandalf had heard of. The man’s name is Beorn and he is a skin changer (he changes it a great black bear)...
After being fed and resupplied the party goes north for three days and then they have to go through Murkwood. This is where Gandalf leaves the picture and does some business southward.
Their way through is not challenged. Being very dark it is slow going. The first bad thing is while they are crossing a cursed river Bombur falls in and takes a nice nap and so they had to carry him. The second thing that happened was they try to get food from elves that thing that they are assaulting them. Thorin gets caught by the elves and the other dwarfs get caught by giant spiders that lived in the surrounding area. After Bilbo saves them, elves take the dwarfs but they miss Bilbo because he had his ring on.

week 2 question
This quote has many meanings to it. C.S Lewis seems to be trying to say that literature makes every day life more exiting and interesting. When Lewis says, “it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become," they are stating that literature makes dry and dull lives more lively.
In The Hobbit C. S. Lewis's quote is very true. This book is a very exciting adventure book that will wipe all of the stress away from work, school, TAXES, and other stressful things.
Along with this if Bilbo Read more books than he might have been more resourceful in the caves with Gullom and his experience might not have been so stressful.

Gollum's Riddles
... After running for some time Bilbo splashed into water. Due to the fact he couldn’t swim and he feared the slimy creatures within he did not venture out. Suddenly there was a hiss from beside him. It was old Gollum. He apparently had wanted to eat poor Bilbo. After some negotiating they decided on a riddle game. If Bilbo won then Gollum would show him the way out, but if Gollum won, well let’s just say that the meat would not be wasted. After quite a few Riddles Bilbo says something totally uncalled for. He felt in his pocket and said to himself, "What’s in my pocket". Gollum and I were equally disturbed by this question (for I had picked sides by now). After 3 tries by Gollum he said that he had to get something from his island. After a while Bilbo grew inpatient to go then he heard wailing from Gollum’s island and him saying that it was gone. Finally after a while he came back to Bilbo. Gollum wanted to know what was in his pocketses. Of course the stubborn hobbit refused to answer, and so Gollum came after him. As they ran Bilbo reached into his pocketses and slipped on the ring. At that moment he tripped again. Amazingly Gollum did not see him and kept running, cursing all the way. Seeing how Gollum can see in the dark this can mean only one thing, the Nasty Hobbitses had stolen Gollum’s birthday present and was invisible. Now on top of that he was following Gollum to the way out. Luckily Gollum plopped himself down in the passage to get out, and was listening carefully for any disturbance. Unfortunately when Bilbo jumped over Gollum, Gollum missed him by inches. Finally after slipping through an area with many goblins alerted by the shrieks by Gollum when he got away, Bilbo made it out of the goblin caves.

Rivendell and the Misty Mountains
After getting resupplied at the Elvin kingdom of Rivendell the party begins one of the most perilous parts of the journey, the journey over the misty mountains. This part is made very difficult by goblins. I could give you a 15 page report of how they get into this predicament but I don't have the time to write it all out, not to mention that you probably don't want to read it. So to summarize the whole thing, the party gets stuck out in a ferocious thunder storm and so they find a dry cave. This cave only goes back far enough to get all of the gear and people inside so they disregard the danger that they could get captured by goblins. this is not true because when they are sleeping a opening opens up at the back of the cave and the company of travelers are captured by goblins, and from the grotesque singing from the goblins, the party is going to be tortured. (Now isn't that a nice way to treat your guests!!) When they emerged from the tunnel the room opened up to form a great hall. The great goblin recognized the company as dwarfs and was very angry. He immediately got up and started toward them. Just then Gandalf who amazingly was never caught turned all the lights off. He then led the company through the underground labyrinth. Since poor little Bilbo couldn't run as fast as the wizard or the dwarfs he had to cling on to the back of one of the dwarfs.suddenly a goblin grabbed the dwarfs leg and Bolbo fell and got left behind beacause he was knocked out!! After he came to he felt around to see where he was in the pitch blackness. As he felt around he felt a ring. (How fortunate he has found this or there would not be the trilogy called The Lord of the Rings)Bilbo then stumbles off into the darkness...
the journey begins
the next day they get an early start. the first major obstacle that they encounter is 3 trolls. being very hungry and cold, from rescuing one of the ponies that ran into the river, they spotted a fire somewhere off in the distance and they send Bilbo to see if the area was clear. Unfortunately he gets trapped by the trolls. then because he did not return the dwarfs went to see where he had gone. They also got caught by the trolls. they get out of this predicament by gandalf. he imitates the trolls voices, and not being very bright they start an argument. this lasts all the way till sunrise, and if you know anything about trolls you could tell what comes next but since they are not very common today I will tell you. trolls are very strange creatures, when in sunlight trolls turn stone. then being not supervised by the trolls, that were now stone, the hobbit and the dwarfs could get away.
